Grant agrees to Mika’s terms and promises to hand over the ship in return for his father’s life. Mika is very pleased and tells him he has made the right decision. When Drent suggests Mika cannot be trusted, Mika tells him to not interfere with the decisions of his elders and superiors and keep out of things.
Grant puts Mika on hold while they discuss what to do next. Cyrus talks to Orac, who tells them it is very unlikely that Mika Hunt will keep his side of the bargain and the ship cannot be allowed to fall into his hands.
Cyrus asks if Orac is able to disable the life support system on Mika’s ship, with the exception of the flight deck where his father is, which Orac says of course he can. They discuss whether to do this or not, but Orac then informs them he has carried out their instructions.
Grant then talks to Mika, who is apoplectic that Grant is not doing what he says and ranges from rage to despair, insisting he must have the Liberator. He ungags William Kennedy and tells him to tell his son to give in, as he (William) knows that Mika is capable of doing what he threatened.
Instead, William tells Mika his son is tougher than he looks and he will go ahead with cutting off Mika’s life support if he does not let him go. When Mika refuses to co-operate Grant offers one Million Credits to anyone of Mika’s scared staff to kill Mika.
William ups this to five million, and after a delay Mika is shot in the head by one of his men, a body guard called Lance Warchild. Lance lets William go and they get Orac to restore the life support.
William is transported over via a shuttle to the Liberator and Dirk takes him from the airlock to the flight deck. William is amazed at the ship.
When this derelict ship opens its space doors, Cyrus is able to detect that Mika’s drug processing ship is docked in there too.
The Kennedy family’s assets can only afford to pay Lance one million Credits right now, which he accepts providing future payment is made soon. In the meantime, it seems Lance is taking over Mika’s operation. The crew decide not to interfere with this and promise to let him do what he wants and pay him the money he is owed when they can.
They leave the vicinity of the derelict ship and then plan a long jump from Pretoria to Blackhawk in the Magash system, the Sector capital planet, where William will reclaim some of the family assets and try to rebuild their fortunes.
The jump takes about ten hours and crew mostly relax and sleep. William is tired too and cuts short catching up with Grant in order to catch up on good food and sleep, which he has not had for a long, long time.
When they arrive in the Magash system, they proceed to Blackhawk. Tarrant takes a shuttle to go down to the planet for medical aid. He needs 30,000 Credits to fix injuries incurred in the Phosos system fighting Clegg, which Grant pays for.
Drent takes another shuttle and accompanies Cyrus to some ATV junkyards on Blackhawk, where he is looking for a customisable vehicle, plus visit some local bars.
William and Grant go with them, but leave Drent and Cyrus once on the surface and go to see a solicitor that William has on this world. They set about recovering what family assets they can. While there, they discover that Grant’s uncle, Vlen Kennedy, has died on Regina and they need to claim the body in order to obtain access to Vlen’s assets. As they are short of money right now, William asks Grant to recover Vlen’s body, as it will be a useful source of funds.
