Frederick and Thaddius arrive in a strange alien jungle. It is day time. They are surprised to see that they are accompanied by a third person, a girl, clearly another time agent. He says her name is Maria, but seems rather confused and is clearly on her first mission. She seems to think that she was sent on this mission by angels and has some sort of Germanic accent.
They decide to explore the jungle and come across a strange banana like cactus that spits out spines. One hits Frederick in the hand and he passes out. Thaddius and Maria grab him and pull him away from the plant. They soon realise that there is a large patch of these evil plants in this area and they seem able to waddle slowly forward. Thaddius is also hit by a thorn, but it does not pierce his under garment or touch his skin.
Maria realises that other vegetation seems to avoid these plants and suggests they head into deep undergrowth. Thaddius gets out his sword and hacks his way through.
Frederick begins to develop a swelling on his hand and the skin turns white. They pull the thorn out of him and try to extract the poison.
They are forced to rest after a short while, but they seem to have gotten away from the deadly plants. Thaddius and Maria notice there is a damaged trail in the jungle where something had flattened the trees and undergrowth over a long burnt streak and there is some sort of house sized object at the end of the trail.
Maria watches as the swelling on Frederick’s hand miraculously heals up and he comes around feeling fine. They resolve to follow this trail – at least it is clear of those plants – and see what Frederick suspects is a crashed spaceship “like something from Buck Rogers.”
As they approach they can see the ship has been damaged by the impact of the crash. Then a voice from a tree above them tells them that is far enough. A man with a large strange looking rifle weapon in his hands covers them from high up a tree. He asks who they are and what they are doing here on Kemble. The time travellers are unable to offer much of an explanation.
Frederick and Thaddius had already mentioned to Maria that it wasn’t just a question of where they are, but when, so she asks this man what year it is. His response of Space Year 4027 isn’t much help. She asks how long since the Birth of Christ. The man says that calendar isn’t used any more, but it would be around 6000 AD. They say they are from the 19th century.
He asks about the direction they approached the ship from and he says there is nothing over there but Varga plants, very nasty and dangerous.
Another man appears holding a similar weapon from the back of the ship and suggests to his friend Cory (the one in the tree) that they should be killed as they are clearly Enemy Agents and spies. The travellers protest loudly they are not. Cory tells Lowrey he is not sure about them but they seem rather poor spies as their cover story is hopeless.
He asks them if they have seen their companion Gavery, he left the area a few hours ago on a scouting mission and has not returned. They have not.
Cory climbs down from the tree and asks if any of them know how to repair a ship. Frederick says he can try to help and they go inside. The back area contains storage and machinery, some of which is fantastic to the eyes of Maria and to a lesser extend Thaddius. There are open panels where Lowrey has been trying to repair the damaged ships systems and Frederick starts to help him, as somehow he seems to understand the concepts even if he is not familiar with the specific equipment on the ship.
Cory takes Thaddius and Maria into the cockpit, where there is an array of control panels. One of them is a motion detector, which he says they did not show up on.
Thaddius asks more about the Enemy that Cory mentioned early. Cory tells him the Earth Alliance has many enemies. He is about to explain further when the motion detector comes to life. Someone is approaching.
They go outside and see a man in uniform stumbling towards the ship. Lowery confirms it is Gavery, but the man seems to be hurt and stumbling. As he gets closer they see his skin has turned white and he has nasty black spins growing out of him, like a Varga plant.
Lowery moves to help him, but Cory warns him to keep back. They hear a gargled, inhuman voice from Gavery saying he must kill. Cory shoots him down with his laser rifle, burning a hole in his front. Lowery is aghast and tries to help Gavery. Cory tells him to leave him alone, the Varga plants got him and there is nothing that can be done.
They return to the ship. Lowery and Frederick continue the repair work, though Frederick spots Lowery scratching at an itchy patch on his hand at one point.
Thaddius again tries to draw Cory on the Enemy and Cory is about to tell him about one particular race who are very dangerous when the motion detectors go off again. There are four unknown blips closing in from extreme range. Then movement much nearer the ship is detected as well.
Meanwhile Frederick has come to the conclusion that the ship is damaged beyond repair. Lowery reacts angrily to this, telling him they must get off this planet, then lashes out with a wrench and hits Frederick, who staggers back.
Cory, Maria and Thaddius go into the back and they see the distinctive white patch of a Varga thorn wound on Lowery’s hand. Cory shoots Lowery down. They are about to leave to investigate the other movement, when the figure of Gavery appears in the doorway, clearly progressing in his transformation into a Varga plant and moving towards them making murderous noises. Thaddius grabs Lowery’s laser rifle and tries to shoot the monster, but he can’t quite work out how to fire it. Cory blasts it with his laser rifle, which burn away parts of Gavery but it seems he seems to be able to continue to function with parts of his flesh burnt away.
Frederick suggests using fire and Cory directs him to some thermal packs. Frederick takes one and activates it, putting it on Gavery’s back. The pack burns fiercely and causes the Gavery / Varga creature to burn vigorously. They are forced to evacuate the ship due to the heat and acrid smoke.
They pause to get their breath just as the source of the four blips closing in become visible – strange robotic creatures on discs floating above the trees. Cory calls them Daleks.
The Dalek creatures begin to talk to each other in harsh robotic tones. "Destroy the alien craft and exterminate the hostiles."
Cory has them run for the undergrowth fast. They are fired upon by the Daleks and Cory is wounded before they can get into cover. The Daleks open fire on the spaceship with maximum firepower and destroy it, then spread out to hunt down the survivors.
For some reason, the Dalek detectors are unable to find any of them and they begin to search around angrily chanting that the survivors must be exterminated.
The survivors rest in a dense part of the undergrowth, after dodging Varga plants. Maria begins to tend to Cory’s wound and it emerges it is wearing a one-piece body suit under his uniform, very similar to the ones the time travellers are wearing. He tells them it is a protective stealth suit and is the reason the Daleks cannot detect them. He is surprised they have some.
An ID badge falls out of Cory’s pocket and it shows he is Marc Cory, an Agent for Special Space Security. He injects himself with some sort of pain killer and suggests they keep moving – but to where?
Thaddius gets out his psychic paper and it shows him some sort of rock outcrop sticking up out of the forest. He tells the others and Cory says that’s the one they nearly hit on the way down. They should be able to find it as it would be at the other end of the crash trail left by the ship.
They go back towards the ship, which they can see from the smoke rising into the sky, and then pick up the crash trail and follow it. They can see the rock formation in the distance, some ten miles away or so. It will be a long tough journey, voiding both Dalek patrols overhead and Varga plants on the ground. Cory tells them the Daleks plant the Vargas to keep lifeforms away. They also see some sort of ship descending from the sky and landing on a lower level of the rock formation. Cory says it must be the Dalek base but that was not a Dalek spaceship. They could steal one of the ships and possibly escape.
After a few hours, they are surprised to see the sun is going down. Cory tells them the days and nights are short on this moon. They find somewhere to rest for the night and keep watch. Thaddius’s first watch is uneventful, until he sees and hears another ship landing at the rock formation.
In the morning Cory uses his last pain killer and they head off towards the Dalek base. When they get near, they see there is a doorway half way up the rock face, which Dalek patrols regularly fly in and out of. There looks to be a door at ground level too. However, all around the rock for a few hundred meters, the vegetation has been flattened and burnt away. They decide to wait until dark for cover.
To avoid visual detection they time the movement of the Daleks and work out they have about 20 minutes between patrol movements. They set out during one of these gaps as fast as they can, but Maria sense danger as they get nearer, there is something wrong.
Frederick wonders if they are in a mine field and he gets out the sonic screwdriver, which sense some sort of power source on the ground ahead. It is about half a meter wide and goes off left and right as far as the device can detect. They will have to jump over it.
Maria still thinks that would be dangerous, so Frederick checks further and detects a field above the strip, which if disturbed would trigger an alarm. He will need something with a power source to create a fake field around them so the alarm does not go off. Cory says he does not have anything like that, but Frederick scans him and disagrees – his laser rifle.
Cory won’t give up his weapon, so Thaddius hands over the rifle he has been carrying that he got from Lowery. It takes Frederick a while to rig something up and in the meantime a Dalek patrol passes over. The Dalek slows and deploys a search light, obviously suspicious about something, then is called away by other orders.
Frederick completes his modification of the laser rifle and uses it to jump through the field undetected. He helps the others across. Cory nearly falls and Thaddius manages to grab him just as he was about to touch the detector band on the floor.
They continue to the base of the rock, Frederick making sure there are no other traps. They find a sealed metal door, which Frederick opens with the sonic screwdriver and they enter the Dalek complex. It all seems quiet here and they follow the corridor to a lift, but Cory speculates the Daleks will detect if it is used.
They search about and find another door, which opens to the bottom of a shaft where Daleks on their floating discs clearly move up and down. They manually climb up the side of the shaft, which is hard work and they continually slip. But they get to the top, pausing to ensure no Daleks are around.
They find a four way junction of corridors and are not sure how to proceed. Cory tells them to ask Maria – she has some sort of instinct for this. Maria tries and leads them off down a certain corridor. They stop occasionally as Daleks glide past ahead, but they are not spotted.
Eventually they get near a control room and see a black coloured Dalek giving orders and making arrangements for a conference now that all the delegates have arrived. The group are aghast that the Daleks are clearly planning something important. Cory says they must hijack one of the spaceships and get a message off to the Earth Alliance.
They follow Maria’s intuition towards the space port but along the way a Dalek confronts them, asking them to identify themselves. Cory tells it they are delegates. The Dalek asks which delegates are they.
Thaddius quickly scans the creature’s mind and gets a horrible impress of a cold, calculating hatful mind that wants to kill everyone. However, he is able to pick up that it thinks they are delegates from Arcturus and tells the Dalek this. It seems satisfied, though points out they need to get to the conference hall quickly. They say they just need to get something from their ship and they will be there.
They hurry to the spaceport and see a myriad of ships parked under a protective cover – which is why they were not detected from space, Cory points out.
Suddenly an alarm sounds, with a Dalek voice announcing false Arcturan delegates have been seen in the complex, all patrols to alert status. Secure the spaceport.
He says the Arcturan ship would be the easiest to steal, so head for that one, Frederick breaking in using the sonic screwdriver.
Inside the ship, a human in a uniform is aboard. Cory calls him a traitor and shoots him down before going to the cock pit. Maria is saddened by this and moves to help the wounded man.
Cory attempts to start the ship, but he is having difficulties. Frederick tries to open communications but the Daleks have a jamming signal.
Thaddius reads the mind of the wounded Arcturan and gets the access codes, which he passes on to Cory.
Daleks begin firing as Cory starts to move the ship. He raises the shields and pilots the ship out of the spaceport, but Daleks on their discs are following and continuously firing.
Once they are clear of the atmosphere, the jamming begins to clear. Cory tries to go to hyperspace, but Dalek fire damages the drive systems. Frederick uses Cory’s ID codes to transmit a message to the Interstellar Network, while the ship takes more damage from the relentless Dalek fire.
Frederick transmits a warning of Dalek activity on Kemble, they are holding a conference and making plans against the Earth Alliance just as the ship’s hull is breached. The time travellers see time slow for a moment and their wrist bands beep an emergency signal, then they vanish just as the ship explodes.
