SAVE (Societas Alba Via Eternitata - the Eternal Society of the White Way) was an organisation in the original CHILL game that the players were members of. This organisation co-ordinated the fight against "the Unknown" (later called the Dark), which was the source of monsters and supernatural manifestations in the world. It was founded in Ireland by Charles O'Boylan in Victorian times and the Headquarters were still at the O'Boylan Estate, near Dublin.
The symbol of SAVE was the Indalo, man's search for answers. SAVE agents were expected to wear the Indalo and it was a way to recognise other members.
The leader of SAVE was a very powerful magician and psychic called Adam Fortune. He was occasionally able to rescue very desperate situations. It turned out he was actually Charles O'Boylan, the founder of SAVE, who had been cheating death for a long time. Eventually though, Death caught up with him, with unwitting help from the Paul Le'nond group, (See below)
SAVE maintained investigative groups who would go out on missions to deal with manifestations from the Dark. The player characters formed the members of one group. Over the years a number of different groups were created, for different player groups.
Paul Le'mond, Lawrence Scarman, Dr William Phillips and Mark Stanley were one group. I know they played the Dark Angel adventure, with the Hermetic Order of the Silver Twilight mixed in. A lot of the plot for these characters is forgotten.
One story arc for this group involved the players working for Death, who took a female persona. The players gained the ability to recover from even fatal damage while in Death's service. They were sent on one or more quests, which ultimately lead them to discover that Adam Fortunate, the powerful magician head of SAVE, was actually Charles O'Boylan, the original founder of SAVE in the 19th century. O'Boylan had been avoiding Death all this time and the players had helped her break through his defences and finally claim him. She then left satisfied and took away the protection she had given the players.
Frank Kings, Nick Kelland, Andrew Finch and John Mathews were another group. I have some very old notes listing the adventures this group played.
The list does not go into detail about what the stories involve. However, from "The Trimere Gambit" onwards I have my notes of what I was planning to do in that story, but not what actually happened. A lot of the plot at that point revolved around Vampires and a lot of lore from the Vampire - the Masquerade was used in the game.
From The Overlord Village onwards, the game shifted to a group of less powerful characters, as the originals were getting too strong. SAVE wanted to keep these characters for the main fight again the Left Hand Path and have other groups investigate smaller matters. Those characters were Dr Martin Everage, Yvette Goddard, Sven Larson, Frederick von Stook and later John Singing-Rock.
Ultimately though, the fight remained between the Right and Left Hand Path, with SAVE and the RHP in alliance, until the NWI destroyed SAVE HQ.
SAVE and its members eventually became drawn into a global conflict between the Left Hand Path, a group of mostly dark magicians out to dominate the world through magic, and the Right Hand Path, a group of powerful psychics trying to help and protect the world. SAVE became allies of the Right Hand Path and its members tended to join SAVE.
There were 13 members of the Left Hand Path (LHP). Members were pretty much chosen at birth. This did mean that if one of their members were killed, it would be 20 odd years before their replacement grew into power and maturity. All members of the LHP were very powerful magicians and were individually more power than RHP members. Those powerful magics included extending their lives over many centuries.
I have a list of the members of the LHP:
Lang Fu (Tibet - Leader)
Trimere (Europe)
Hal Shai-Chech (China)
Rasputin (Russia)
Misquamacus (America)
Cynthia Baxter (SE Asia)
Mark Sly-Jek (Central / South America)
Carl Stanford (Britain)
Mohammid Das (India)
Frank Kinley (Head of NWI)
Siddig El-Fukir (Egypt - still a child)
Charles Hopkins (An anomoly - he just appeared one day after the death of Kulek)
There were 7 members of the Right Hand Path (RHP). Existing adults became members of the RHP upon the death of a previous member. This meant that no matter how many RHP members the LHP killed, others would always spring up, ready to challenge them. Members of the RHP tended to be powerful psychics rather than magicians.
I have a list of the members of the RHP:
Alex Fletcher
John Singing-Rock
Charles Hopkins
Lee (China)
Farooq (Egypt)
John Mathews
Empty = Ring held by LHP
Members of the LHP and the RHP wore near identical rings. The LHP ring denoted a dragon consuming a crucifix, while the RHP had the crucifix supressing the dragon. These rings became very important and new members would become aware of their brothers and their mission upon putting the ring on.
At one point, the leader of the LHP managed to capture a RHP ring and prevent a new RHP member appearing. However, one of the players who was a RHP member went on a quest and was able to rescue the ring.
Charles Hopkins was involved in this campaign and part of the story Arc revolved around his split personality, being a member of both the Left and Right Hand Paths. There were a lot of other characters, such as Victor Lazo, about which I remember very little.
The campaign featured the epic fight between SAVE and the dark powers of the Left Hand Path. It is the Chill campaign I most remember and have the fondest memories of. This campaign was rather high powered towards the end though and I will probably never run another campaign at that level again.
I also have a document I created at some point, listing key members of SAVE in the UK. This seems to have a mix of a number of characters from a few campaigns.
