Torien's Watch

Details of the County of Torien's Watch, where the Player Characters are based.


The County of Torien's Watch


Torien's Watch is a heavily forested province that acts as the gateway to the north - all trade that wishes to travel to Cariele, Dhoesone or the Rjurik lands must pass through Torien's Watch. The foresters of Torien's Gap are charged with ensuring that Mhoried will always have wood for its bows, and are notoriously harsh to those who fell wood, or hunt in the land without licence. Disputes with merchants from Cariele are legion, but the guilds of Cariele are anxious not to offend the Mhor and so the conflicts rarely grow too serious. The hills of Torien's watch are rumoured to hold great mineral wealth, but the Mhor has never approved substantive explorations, some say that an ancient oath sworn to seal peace with the Sidhe explains this reticence, but none know the truth of the matter save the Mhor, who will not speak of it.

Medenie

The county town of Torien's Watch and the biggest town in the county. It is walled and is guarded by Torien's Keep, the home of Count Torien.

The home town of Clan Baird.

Leathen

The home town of clan MacRuaidhri.

Count Torien


Under the Anuirean Imperial system, a Count is a hereditary noble who controls a single province or county. The leader of the Torien Clan currently holds the title of Count of Torien's Watch, a position that dates back to long before the last Emperor was killed. Above a Count is a Baron, who controls several provinces and above a Baron is a Duke. The Mhor's official title is Duke of Mhoried, but he is usually styled as the Mhor.

Count Torien has a number of powers and responsibilities in the county, including

  • Defender of the County Responsible for protecting the County in the Mhor's name.
  • Collection of Taxes
  • Protecting the Forests
  • High Justice The Count appoints local magistrates and their decisions can be appealed to him.


The County Council


The Count regularly holds a meeting of the important person in the county, usually at least one every season. The Council has few formal powers and the Count can ignore it completely, but it is common for the Count to listen to its opinions and consider them when acting.

Matters that are usually discussed at the Council include:

  • Consideration of Current Events
  • Consultation on new proposals by the Count
  • Messages and Proclamations by the Mhor
  • Resolving Disputes between the Clans
  • Tax Collection and rates of Taxation
  • Law and Order
  • Military Matters

Members of the Council include:

  • The Count
  • The Leader of the Allardice Clan
  • The Leader of the Baird Clan
  • The Leader of the Lophroaig Clan
  • The Leader of the MacRuaidhri Clan
  • The County Minister - the Count's Principle advisor and bureaucrat
  • The Mayor of Medinie - the leader of the biggest town in the County
  • The local leader of the King's Guardians
  • The Chief Forester
  • Head of the local Church of Haelyn
  • Head of the local Church of Erik

It is not unusual for the Leader of each clan to bring along with him senior members of his clan and to consult them for advice when needed.
