Gert manages to rent a house for a week on the edge of town, but it is more expensive than he hoped. 34 Iron Street. It has a coal cellar. He heads back to the Church, but the others are not there. He decides to wait.
Bart learns that Councillor Teugen has left just before the Council meeting. He plans to break into Councillor Teugen’s office, picking the lock of the door. He steals various random papers plus anything valuable, such as a gold snuff box. He then breaks into another office and steals the normal robes of a Councillor at the Council meeting and walks out of the Council House.
Leon, Johanna and Adolphus are watching the Teugen house. They spot a monk arrive, one of the Brotherhood of St Signus. When he leaves, Adolphus and Leon follow him, leaving Johanna to watch the house. They find the monk heads to a house owned by the Merchants Guild.
Leon goes to the Church and catches up with Gerhart, while Adolphus goes back to get Johanna and they all return to the Church.
They meet up at the Church and then head for the safe house on Iron Street. They settle in and plan their next move. They decide to watch the Brotherhood’s house.
Bart leaves, disguising himself as a beggar and rolling in sheep dung. He then walks up to the Brotherhood house and knocks on the door, as a filthy beggar. He tries to get the monk to let him in, but he tells him to go clean himself and he must work to earn the food he wants. Bart stumbles into the monk and gets basic idea of the layout of the ground floor, but there are two other levels above.
Adolphus goes to watch Councillor Teugen’s house. Bart and Leon go to watch the Brotherhood’s house. Johanna and Gerhart stay at their house.
Leon works out monks are coming back and forth to another location. He follows two of them, who go the back entrance of an old disused warehouse. He overhears what sounds like chanting from the building. He goes back to the Brotherhood house but can’t find Bart so returns to their safe house.
Bart meanwhile is trying to break into a second floor window and had a nightmare, slipping and falling into the street, only just able to break his fall. After a few mishaps, he gets to the window of the house where the Brotherhood are. He sneaks around in the house, at one point being heard, but an investigating monk does not see him and thinks it is just the wind.
There are only two monks in the house and they are on guard, he over hears them say. He goes to a first floor store room and waits for them to go to sleep.
Leon returns to the safe house and tells Johanna and Gert that they must get their fighting gear ready. They collect Adolphus, who goes back to the house to get his gunpowder grenades.
They go to the back entrance to the warehouse and it is barred from the inside. They decide to wait until some of the monks come out. After half an hour they begin to think nothing is going to happen.
They decide to knock on the door. Adolphus suggests they use the secret ear scratch. Leon knocks on the door, while the others remain out of sight. Nothing happens. Tries a secret knock – nothing happens. Instead he opens the sliding speech hole, Adophus reaches in and removes the bar.
They enter the warehouse. They hear Latin chanting that sounds dark and evil. They find a circle of monks with a naked man tied to two posts, being whipped and poked by two monks while the rest chant.
The town clock strikes midnight and the chanting stops. Smoke emerges from the urn under the man in the stocks, and he reacts, crying out and growing as fur grows on his body and he takes the form of a werewolf.
