The Body of the Werewolf

Bart is upset that nothing is being done about the body of the werewolf and wants Adolphus to do something about it, but Adolphus is tired and tells him to sort it out in the morning.

At the break of dawn, Bart makes noises, trying to wake the others up, especially Adolphus, who rolls over and goes back to sleep.

About 9am, they all stir. Adolphus wants coffee but they are not sure there is a coffee shop in town. The festival does beer, so they go there for breakfast and light ale.

Bart complains to Adolphus about the treatment of the ex-werewolf. Adolphus tells him he wants to pick his fights. Bart tells Adolphus he’s not being a good Christian, to which Adolphus takes offense.

Burn the Monster

They see smoke and smell a fire. After breakfast they head over to see what is happening. There is a pyre in the centre of town and they are burning the body of the werewolf. Bart is now appeased, as Muslims are happy with burning the dead.

Councillor Teugen is at the head of a small group of City Councillors and gives a speech about how shocking all this must be but he is very pleased the evil has been purged and the monster destroyed.

He speaks of the death of Father Luther and announces a funeral at 6pm tonight at the church. He spots the party and invites them over to receive praise. They have been awarded 20gp each for their services to the town.

The Monk Prisoner

Then he brings out the leader of the monks, branding him the leader of evil. The monk spits out curses on the town and he is ordered gagged, hooded and taken away. Councillor Teugen announces that he will be tried and hanged in accordance with the law.

This upsets Adolphus, who shouts out that the prisoner is in his custody and a legal argument breaks out, which Councillor Teugen suggests they continue at the Council House. They spot Gideon in the crown behind Teugen, who is staring hatefully at the party.

Adolphus accompanies Teugen to the Council House, saying he does not want the prisoner to disappear and he does not want him hanged. He may have some very useful information he has yet to reveal.

Joanna sees in the crowd is the local Doctor, who she wants help from because he can read Latin. As they are heroes of the town, the Doctor agrees to meet with her later to look at this book.

Watching the Prisoner

The others leave Adolphus to his legal arguments at the Council house and go to the prison to keep an eye on the monk prisoner. They talk with the militia captain, who says he cannot release the prisoner without orders from the Council. They have a friendly chat and wait around.

Leon is spat on by the monk, then has a funny turn in which he has an urge to shoot the monk, but he resists and then sits down. Bart plays cards with the guards and wins money off them.

Johanna goes off to her appointment with the doctor and shows him the book of evil, warning him about the book and the possibility the devil worshippers had plans for Walpurgis Nacht. The doctor helps as he can try but his Latin is a little rusty. The book appears to mostly consist of prays and they do not find very much. The doctor offers to look after the book and read through it, but Johanna declines. She will get a friend of Adolphus to read it.

They return to the prison. The afternoon passes uneventfully, but Adolphus does not return.

Leon takes Bart back to the safe house while Johanna and Gerhart keep watching the prisoners. They find Adolphus furiously writing letters, attacking the Council for not knowing Imperial law. He is writing to various people to get help enforcing the law.

When Leon tells him he had a funny turn, Adolphus tells them that is some sort of devil magic that causes “accidents”. He will need to protect the prisoner with crosses to avoid the magic affecting him. He takes crosses off people and heads for the prison.

Funeral Plans

Leon goes to see the Verger at the church, but there is a large crowd assembling in preparation for Father Luther’s funeral. He sees the Verger, asking if he is OK.

Bart asks if Councillor Teugen will be at the funeral, which the Verger confirms as he will be leading one of the eulogies.

Leon points of that a lot of people will be at the funeral and it is likely that very few will be at Councillor Teugen’s house. They could do with getting hold of some of his personal correspondence as evidence.

The problem is by this time in April it is still light at 6pm when the funeral is due to happen, making breaking into Councillor Teugen’s house difficult. However, the funeral will last a long time and there will be a wake with a feast afterwards.

Bart gets more sausages and laces them with Laudanum.

They go to the prison, where they find Johanna, Gerhart and Adolphus. Crosses and holy water has been set up around the door of the monk leader’s room.

Councillor Teugen’s House

They tell the others of the plan to break into Teugen’s house. Johanna wants to go to the funeral and Adolphus will stay with them. Gerhart will stay looking after the prisoner.

They got to the start of the funeral and find Councillor Teugen there, but cannot see Gideon. They stay until it gets back then Leon and Bart sneak away, to Councillor Teugen’s house. Bart is concerned that Councillor Teugen is under the protection of the Thieves’ Guild. He suggests they look around to see if anyone is obviously watching the house, but there is no obvious sign of the house being watched.

Bart climbs the walls and gets into the grounds quietly. Leon follows. The dogs are in their kennels, but Bart gives them the drugged sausages anyway and waits for them to fall asleep.

Bart sneaks up to the house, finding the back door unlocked and he enters cautiously. The house seems quiet, no sign of any guards. They sneak upstairs and head for the study.

They door falls open and there are lights on inside. Gideon is sat in a magic circle holding some sort of wand. He says “Welcome my friends. The Lord of Light told me you were coming.”
